Description: This rhizome is based on unique pattern from the Baron Eduard (Edward) Bergenheim factory, dating back to the early 20th century. The prototype is an authentic Mettlach tile discovered in one of Kyiv’s historical buildings.
The design of this piece is remarkable for its structural complexity: a relief imitation of fine square mosaic creates a dynamic geometric labyrinth. The central part, built on a diagonal rhythm, is framed by a crisp rectangular border. This pattern embodies the order and functionality of industrial Art Nouveau: each “tile” of the ornament once provided a durable, non-slip surface in the busy halls of old Kyiv; today, it has become a geometric matrix for living roots.
Rhizome breathes new biological life into this symbol once frozen in ceramic. Using a method of guided growth, wheat roots fill the historical form, creating a delicate yet living lace. It is a dialogue between the architectural code of the old city and the relentless energy of nature.
